The Bush administration is bent on stopping Iran from going nuclear one way or another. While President George W Bush was quite overt in his speech on Wednesday, Vice-president Dick Cheney was moderate in his remonstrance on the Iran nuclear issue.

Since last year when Iran first took steps to fund its uranium enrichment project, it has become the United States’ number one enemy. President Bush is convinced that Iran wants to build nuclear weapons so that it can control the Middle Eastern region; in fact, he believes that Iran’s nuclear power would actually destabilize the world peace and security.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmedinejad has always denied the allegations and has consistently repeated that he wants to develop nuclear facility for peaceful purposes and for the development of his nation’s economy. Now Mr. Cheney’s reiteration about the US never ever letting Iran is only going to enhance the dispute in the international community.

While the US and its key ally Britain support international sanctions on Iran, both Russia and China are firmly against the idea. So much so, that just a few days ago, Russian President Vladimir Putin actually hinted at his support for Iran’s nuclear ambitions and warned the US against any military action on the Asian nation.

Last week Mr. Bush rang the alarm bells when he remarked that should Iran be allowed to pursue nuclear developments unabated, the World War III would arrive soon. That is of course overstated but the truth is laid bare for all to observe.

As long as the controversy over Iran’s nuclear issue drags on, the world will get more and more divided. Something has to give in: either the US has to back out of its idea to stop Iran from acquiring any kind of nuclear facility or Iran has to stop its nuclear project. At the moment, neither move appears likely.
