Lawmakers have evaded taking any stand for the constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage in Massachusetts.

To get a place in November 2008 ballot for Gay Marriage issue, the lawmakers will have to vote for it before the next Legislature takes office.

Lawmakers had voted out with 196-0 to reject the proposed amendment to ban gay marriages.

Supporters of the less restrictive measure said voters deserved a chance to decide whether same-sex marriage, imposed on the state by its highest court, should remain legal.

Arline Isaacson of the Massachusetts Gay and Lesbian Political Caucus reacted over the lawmakers stand by saying that this is over now.

Kris Mineau of the Massachusetts Family Institute has often opposed the gay marriage. He said that the Legislature was thumbing its nose at the US constitution.
