george tenet held responsible for failure to pursue al qaeda threat

Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) blames ex-chief for not strategizing enough against Al Qaeda threats before 9/11 WTC attacks. However, there was no single point of failure that could have prevented the catastrophe.

George Tenet, CIA’s ex-chief is blamed for the role he played before 9/11 tragic incident that showed he was oblivious of his job of managing the intelligence network. So should we think that 9/11 happened not because of Osama Bin Laden and his Al Qaeda but because of total intelligence failure by the authorities. It means thousands of lives could have been saved had U.S. intelligence been a bit attentive and proactive.

An absolute incompetence on the part of the intelligence agency led by George Tenet is held responsible for failing to prepare a strategic plan beforehand against the threats posed by Al Qaeda. It may be concluded that it underestimated Al Qaeda threats or was over confident of its approach that disastrously lacked vigilance. Moreover, America had never been attacked on its soil since 1895, therefore even an inkling of an attack by terrorist forces on American soil did not happen. The agency took the Al Qaeda threats for granted and gathered no momentum to rigorously pursue it.

John Helgerson, CIA inspector general, who led the review team rues,

The agency and its officers did not discharge their responsibilities in a satisfactory manner.

The role that a country’s intelligence agency plays is highly secretive and the responsibility doubles when highly destructive terrorist groups like Al Qaeda warn beforehand. The failure of intelligence puts hundred of thousands of lives at risk as happened on September 11, 2001 when U.S. planes hijacked by terrorists took off to hit the buzzing WTC towers laying several lives dead. Though, the US declared war on terror soon after, yet the war continues into its sixth year without any clue as to where the brain behind the 9/11 attacks, Osama Bin Laden is hiding.

Those who are responsible for guarding the country’s secret agency and tracing anything absurd happening, if found guilty of callous approach are real criminals and should be held accountable.
