Recent suicide bombing at the main U.S. air base in Afghanistan have made it even clearer that there is a possibility of increased terrorist attacks on US. The organization responsible for the terrorist attacks, al-Qaeda, said it was an attempt to assassinate Vice President Dick Cheney. However, U.S. officials disputed the claim, stating that Cheney’s overnight stay at the sprawling Bagram Air Base had been unplanned and that he was well away from the blast.
It’s hard to understand, what the officials are trying to prove by disputing the claim. May be the reason is- psychologically, this comes with a serious blow and they are trying to hide the fact that the attack demonstrated that insurgents in Afghanistan are increasingly bold, willing to attack a heavily fortified U.S. target in the face of unusually tight security. Moreover, the assault was carried out in a part of the country where the Taliban has relatively little support.
However, the war of words is one thing. As the time for action moves closer, Al-Qaeda has greatly changed and the threat out there has in fact grown more dramatically. This attack has highlighted insurgents’ growing capabilities in advance of a widely expected spring offensive.
If the United States is to protect itself, may be its time this nation must develop and continuously refine sound counterterrorism policies appropriate to the rapidly changing world around them.
