The tourist Mecca of the Bahamas – The Caribbean is synonymous with hedonism – from off-the-beaten-path divers’ paradise of Bonaire to fine rums and cricket on the beach. What you might not know about the Caribbean, however, is that it’s also home to one of the most appalling terrorist group from Afghanistan trying to plot attacks against US. Security threats emanating from the Caribbean Basin typically revolve around its drug gangs and smuggling rackets but an alleged plot to blow up New York’s main airport has sparked fears about militant Islam in the Caribbean. Though there is still no evidence of the growth of radical Islam that requires more forceful action however, upon quick examination of the region’s proximity to the US, porous borders and widespread corruption, not to mention the thousands of Americans and Europeans, who come for vacations there at any given time of the year, makes it a nice-looking target. The Caribbean Basin will remain a region of concern in the war on terrorism despite a lack of hard evidence to date, international terrorist organizations such as al-Qaeda. This politically and economically instable region very close to US borders if left with some shortsighted solutions will mean just a little readjustment to the Doomsday Clock.
